Hasia Dreams 03:57
All that she knew, was great grey dunes The rubble and stone of the place she called home They roll on as far as the eye can see Her parents are gone, so she stands there alone When Hasia dreams They are here by her side So she closes her eyes… And Hasia dreams A wave of her hand and the dunes turn to sand The horse that she rides takes her down to the sea She could be a queen, her clothes are so grand She turns to the sun and is free… When Hasia dreams She does not hear their cries So she closes her eyes… And Hasia dreams Hasia fell from the deck the sea A night and a day she was lost on the waves She clung to a hope, to a thread, to a string To a fisherman’s net, and she’s saved When Hasia dreams She looks up to the sky And there are no goodbyes So Hasia dreams

Shiprock 07:06
Her daddy drove them back to Shiprock, the summer gone to rain Ten years since he left on morning and never came home again. She didn’t even know him when he met her from the train, Just a grown-up girl as pale as sand and a tough white Indian. Her mama spent her life pretending, and pedaling her lies. The desert told them show no mercy but she learned to stay alive. Somehow after all these years a grain of family love has survived Because her Daddy, he knew how to drive. Her mama took her finger, wiped away the word regret Daddy got by rolling what he called his special cigarettes. She sat there beside him casting love out like a net but growing up was the only gift, that girl would ever get Her mama spent up all the money on her pills and on her lies The mesas watched it all unfolding, shoulders holding up the skies She was left there with that woman, but at least she grew up to know why Because her Daddy, he knew how to drive. So let’s drive… Now he’s driving back to Shiprock, she’s in the seat beside There’s still a hurt down in her that she will never learn to hide But he’s her Daddy, she’s his girl and that can’t be denied sweet all mixed up with bitter until the day they die When mama lost the fight she’d started, you could see it in her eyes Daddy said it’s you or her girl, so it’s time to say goodbye Now they’re going home to Shiprock take that boat and sail into the sky Because her Daddy, he knew how to drive So let’s drive…

Seven years old Hungry and lean Dad's passed out TV screen... Another bet A losing horse And nothing left for us My dad did all my drinking for me Twelve years old They call my name Free school meals Full of shame And all the while At the bar He's joking with his friends My dad did all my drinking for me Fifteen years old My father died Didn't know how I never cried An empty room A bed, a chair Rum and smoke still fills the air My dad did all my drinking for me

Baby, you taught me how to care Yeah? Well I taught you how to swear Now I can’t take you anywhere Well I think we’ll call that even You show me the finer things in life I bring the trouble, bring the strife Why you want to be my wife? I think you must be crazy Call it a loan I can’t repay You say I don’t owe you anyway And if we don’t get to the promised land... We’ll just have to make do with England Each day you show me how to be Being with you is so goddamn easy That sometimes I’d swear you’re a part of me I’m helpless without you I hand you a feather, snowy white You say ‘Lay your head down, it’ll be alright’ You are my swan-song, my evermore You are what my whole life is for

She got, white hair and blue jeans, She keeps her mind dirty and her teeth clean She can drive fast, she got class There’s nothing left in the bottom of her glass! Four kids and Three dogs She got one ex and two jobs Drives a Trans-Am, says “Yes, Ma’am”, Clothes she wears say “I don’t give a damn” All she wants from you Is a wedding ring… and a new tattoo Five days, she’s up a at three For the first shift at the factory, She can sweet talk, got a mean walk If her boss is lucky then she’ll just punch the clock Skirt’s up, hair down She can turn heads just driving round Gets her drinks free, men are weak-kneed Can’t spend the night ‘cos she’s getting up at three All she wants from you Is a wedding ring… and a new tattoo White hair, blue jeans Talks sweet, walks mean Works hard, looks swell Smells like heaven but she gonna raise hell

about

This 5 track EP presents a somewhat psychedelic take on Americana, going deeper into Jamie's love of 60's music. Rum and Smoke was recorded in Nashville with Doug and Telisha of Wild Ponies (and written with them too), along with Rebecca and Megan of Larkin Poe. Rebecca was in charge of the session, producing the track, and Larkin Poe also provided backing vocals on Wedding Ring and a New Tattoo, the closing track which takes us back into more rock-n-roll territory. Agreement band-mates Jon Hirsch, Emma Lewis and Lance Stafford-Taylor are also present, as is Lucy Powell (Los Feliz) who provides haunting vocals on the opening track.
